:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from fabulouschrissie -- Travel Sories : Once again, Alyson has done a magnificent job of curating. It's always a joy to meet old friends, and read their new stories. It's also fun to greet new friends, and discover authors you haven't read yet. From felucca sailing on the Nile, to visiting Macchu Pichu, wild water rafting on the Zambezi river and buying a rather nice suit in England, these tales are intriguing, inspiring and a joy to read. I loved learning about indigenous people in Central America, and rainforests in Indonesia. If you can't travel to these places yourself, you can see them come alive through the words of these talented authors. Definitely recommended, and I'm looking forward to the third book in the series. Wonderful! : I had the privilege of reading this anthology and reviewing the stories before publication and have to say it is a wonderful collection. Each of the twenty chapters is written by a different writer, and almost all of them have been previously published either as memoir authors or as travel writers. Many of the stories deal with how and why the authors gained their itchy feet, while others focus on a specific travel adventure. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Shirley The Reader -- A Smorgasbord of Adventuring Delights : Alyson Sheldrake has put together another winner. She’s curated 20 writers’ chapters exceedingly well. I settled into my chair and was swept away while reading about rafting the Zambezi’s white water rapids and kayaking the Rio Platano in Honduras. The curator starts out the travel adventures with a bang, from the moment you board a plane trusting you’re going to land in Cairo. I was completely hooked from that moment on, next soaking up rainforest experiences in Sulawesi, then trusting I wouldn’t become a munched lunch in those long hippos’ teeth on the Zambezi. I heard the voices of these 20 authors, I smelled what they smelled, saw and felt it all, even empathising with the sadness and rising anxiety of a marriage breaking down. I arm-chaired my way to Thailand, found myself through yoga in Kathmandu, admired a Savile Row knock-off suit in England, learned so much about the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Then I hopped on a Harley motorbike through France and Spain. So many descriptive turns of phrase and humorous self-deprecation in these chapters, and mainly beautifully written. There’s a terrifying cruise reminiscent of the Titanic, keeping me on the edge of my seat, then the horrendous bad luck in South Africa experienced by another writer’s Grandma Gropp (I loved this one’s writing style, as I did many others’). Much of the writers’ true tales took me back to my own youth, but others’, oh boy, I wouldn’t have dared do what some of them did in life! There are coming of age stories making you howl with laughter. There’s a spooky tale of Dracula’s Castle in Romania, which I knew nothing about, and a gripping adventure on the Ice Truckers’ Road in Alaska. Another chapter had me salivating over French food and fascinating French characters and wartime heroes. Another writer addresses the Itchy Foot Syndrome, which the curator places cleverly after the French characters and food, because it points out “it’s not just about the places you go, or what you do. It’s about the people you meet.” Then you fly high to visit Peru’s Machu Picchu, and on to a canal boat plying the rough waters between Denmark and Sweden and learn about Danish Jews fleeing the Nazis in World War II. Next came a current Covid-19 pandemic experience of fleeing South Africa to Turkey. Finally, exhilarated, I journeyed in a kayak up the Rio Platano in Honduras to live with the indigenous Pech people, which ended the whole anthology with yet another bang. All these 20 chapters were gripping tales of adventures in a myriad of styles, all making my own feet start to itch once again. Excuse me while I go to pack my backpack and pull out my own camera and passport. Thank you, Alyson Sheldrake, for forwarding me an Advanced Reader Copy of this brilliant anthology.
