• 1.0 out of 5 stars from Kathryn Price -- Deeply Disappointing : While I agree with the author's assertions about translogical thinking, I was stunned by his narrow conclusion, which is basically a bad altar call. He decides Christianity most aligns with his scientific views and a version of Christianity that is obviously evangelical is what he then presents. Earlier in the book he makes assertions about animals that are uninformed and I would advise him to apply his own translogical thinking there instead of portraying animals as creatures without a spirit. How would you know, Michael Guillen? He also takes a dig at transgender individuals, which along with his supersessionist remarks about Christianity vis-a-vis Judaism and his aforementioned conclusion about animals caused me to return the book. For the record I'm seminary trained with an M.Div. (Master of Divinity degree) and I'm quite familiar with the Bible. This book had a great beginning with some interesting propositions but it turned into the equivalent of a religous tract. In the end, Guillen's God is small and doesn't reflect much light. At once a love story, a life journey, a mystery and a spiritual experience through the lens of hard science explained in common language. Impossible to put down if you are at all interested is the scientific and spiritual mysteries of existence. The author posits a term I have been searching for to describe paradoxical truths (the greater meaning of metaphors and parable over simple facts): “translogical truths”. Some reviews complain that his driving conclusions end up sounding like proselytizing - they do - but this is the story of his belief and how he came to it, if you don’t agree with his conclusions it doesn’t disparage the book or make it any less exciting. However, I'm having a hard time putting this book down! Dr. Guillen draws us into his journey in a personable and entertaining way. We do not. If God has endowed humans with immaterial souls and is the source of morality, then we should find evidence for that in observations of human behavior. We do not. If God answers prayers, then we should see miraculous effects of prayer. We do not. If God has revealed truths to humanity, then those truths should be empirically verified. They are not. If God is the creator of the universe and the laws of nature, then we should find evidence of that in astronomy and physics. We do not. Especially when it is read by the author. As a journalist, filmmaker, scientist, the artistry of his craft as a journalist and professor show up throughout the book.
